Pardon my radio silence over the past few days, I’ve been quite busy with that most unfortunate of things, real life! However, that doesn’t mean all’s quiet on the writing front, just that I haven’t had either the time or the right mood to blog. So, what’s new? Well, first and foremost and making my week, the wonderful Catherine Russell (who writes a very funny story! I’m partway through the serial Pinholes at present!) has written a review of Mysteries Unite!

The rest of today’s post is about yet another story: today, I’ve put up the beginning of “The Fused“. The first part has been kicking around for a fair while, and perhaps putting it up here will encourage me to hurry up and write the rest of the poor thing! This is not all of chapter one, it’s the first scene – new scenes will be added to the chapter until said chapter is complete!

The Fused is set on a generation ship, drifting between the stars. It’s been out there so long that the colonists no longer really know where they came from or where they’re going: the ship, with its immense habitat domes, is their world. But the respect they once had for their majestic vessel is all but gone, and as part after part of the ship has been removed or abandoned to make way for other developments, the day of critical mission failure draws ever closer. Cut off from the colonists, the ship’s computer sends a projection amongst its people to find someone who will be able to repair it before it’s too late, pitting two teens from across the generations against time, entropy, and short-sighted self-interest.

Epub, Fantasy, Mysteries Unite, Short stories, Uploads

So, today was going to be the day that I uploaded the shiny epub version of Mysteries Unite to this blog, to be downloaded at your leisure. (I say shiny. This is my first shot at epub publication for anyone outside my circle of friends. If there are problems with it, let me know and I’ll fix them in a new release!) Unfortunately, WordPress have decided that while they consider it perfectly legitimate to upload pictures, pdfs, movies, and even spreadsheets (???) into a blog, epubs are simply far too dangerous.

…Okay, actually, it’s probably more like no-one’s ever submitted an epub to the ‘please approve this file extension’ request list. But that involves less interesting hyperbole, and if an author can’t indulge in a little interesting hyperbole every now and again, where’s the fun in that? 😉 In any case, my current workaround is to upload the stories to the public area of my Dropbox. Epubs are tiny, so I’m not exactly at any great risk of overflowing it! You can therefore find the epub edition of Mysteries Unite here!

Copyleft, Fantasy, Mysteries Unite, Short stories

So here we are. It’s long since been done and dusted (I wrote the thing on rather short notice in 2007 and was quite happy with the result), but at long last Mysteries Unite is finally available to the wide, wide world, and not just readers of Durham University’s sci-fi and fantasy student magazine! Am I nervous? Heck yeah. Some part of me is still chewing its fingernails over whether I picked the right CC license, some part of me is debating whether or not I’ll ever get any readers (did any part of my brain ever learn to chill out and wait? Apparently not…), some part of me is asking myself whether I’ve somehow sabotaged all my chances of my books ever appearing in any kind of physical bookshop ever…

But you know what? They can all shut up. I thought about this, and I decided that whether it made it easier or harder for me in the future, or even whether or not anyone even paid any attention, it was the right thing to do. I’ve always wanted to share my work. I’ve always wanted people who enjoy it to be free to mess around with it as they please. This is a guaranteed way of doing it.

But back onto the main topic, Mysteries Unite is live, and I hope at least some of you find it enjoyable!
